Cost Engineer (Hybrid role)

Job Description

About the Role:

Brooks Automation is a global leader in automation solutions for the Semiconductor industry. We are seeking a highly motivated and results-driven Cost Engineer to join our dynamic team in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. This role will be responsible for driving Value Engineering initiatives, Cost Optimization, and Supplier collaboration to ensure efficient and cost-effective product introductions.

The Cost Engineer will support the Semiconductor Automation Supply Chain team as the lead cost engineer for both new and legacy products providing cost estimates and comparison cost for the value of machined and fabricated goods that are provided by the supply chain.

The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, an in-depth understanding of manufacturing processes, and the ability to work cross-functionally with engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing teams.

Work Location: HYBRID – Johor Bahru

Key responsibilities:

  • Determine the cost estimate targets during the design and development process, recommending cost effective solutions.

  • Utilize cost methodologies, tools, and appropriate software models and packages to prepare and maintain reliable and accurate data.

  • Transform product costing through continuous improvement of systems, methods, and procedures.

  • Collect and analyze initial data information to estimate costs associated with manufacturing a machined or fabricated product.

  • Ensure supplier quotations meet “should cost” estimates.

  • Support supplier meetings and negotiations to challenge quotation and direct cost reductions to meet target costs.

  • Gather proposals, specifications, and other related documents from design engineering to convert specifications to cost estimates for new and current products.

  • Support the quote process, ensure quote accuracy, quality, compliance with Brooks Automations goals, responsiveness, and rapid turn-around time of quotes.

  • Lead others by supporting and executing all related processes and procedures.

  • Train, mentor, and provide software modeling support to regions, sites and/or individuals for costing procedures and processes.

  • Provide cost estimates during the change process and advise on the cost impact of changes.

  • Provide costing / pricing support, and leadership to sites and/or other functional groups or regions as required.

  • May provide technical support for DFs (design for all desirable manufacturability) including reviewing engineering changes and assessment of materials/supply chain impact.

  • Review request for information (RFI) and management's requirements to model cost and simulate pricing.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Competencies:

  • Degree in Engineering, Purchasing or other Technical disciplines with at least 5+ years of experience in Cost Estimating within the Semiconductor or High-Tech Manufacturing industry.

  • Strong background with Mechanical commodities (sheet-metal, precision machining, welding, plastics, injection molding, casting, brazing) with ability to read and interpret technical documents including drawings, blueprints, product specifications, material tolerances, finish specifications.

  • Understanding of GD&T and mechanical industry workmanship standards.

  • Demonstrated strong analytical, negotiation and communication skills.

  • Customer-focused, self-motivated with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks with minimal direction, ability to drive initiatives and programs with unclear initial definition.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Project.

  • Knowledge of cost methodologies and software modeling tools, AGILE and CAD software is a plus; Oracle/ERP experience will be an advantage.

  • Prior experience with aPriori preferred.
