Your Role as Maternity Nurse Unit Manager

Hurstville Private Hospital are seeking an experienced and committed Midwife to assist our Maternity Services Manager lead our Obstetric Department. In this pivotal leadership role, you will oversee the strategic and day‑to‑day management of our busy Obstetric service, ensuring the highest standards of patient‑centred care for mothers, babies and their families.

Your New Role

As the Maternity Unit Manager, you will provide proactive leadership to our multidisciplinary team, fostering a culture of excellence, safety and clinical best practice. In collaboration with the Maternity Services Manager, you will be responsible for the efficient management of staffing, resources and patient flow within the Unit. You will also work with other Nurse Unit Managers across the hospital to optimise bed allocation and service delivery.

Your leadership will promote holistic, compassionate care and support the physical, emotional and social wellbeing of both patients and staff. At times, you may also undertake clinical, educational, advocacy, counselling and research responsibilities to support the evolving needs of the Unit.

Through innovation, professional insight and a commitment to continuous improvement, you will lead the review of clinical indicators and service outcomes to enhance the experience of all consumers.

Essential Criteria

  • Current Registration with AHPRA as both a Registered Nurse and Midwife

  • Degree in Nursing, Midwifery, Health Management or equivalent

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in clinical leadership within a Maternity Unit (or relevant acute care environment)

  • Exceptional interpersonal, leadership and communication skills

  • Proven ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team

  • Demonstrated experience leading National Standards and implementing clinical governance frameworks

  • Evidence of developing or implementing new maternity services or programs

  • Demonstrated ability to manage and procure resources effectively within a healthcare setting

  • Proficiency in computer systems and clinical reporting platforms

  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and fostering a learning culture for staff

  • Membership of relevant professional organisations

Desirable Criteria

  • Postgraduate qualification in Midwifery, Nursing, Leadership or Health Management

  • Strong understanding of financial, human resource and operational management principles
