The Census Data Capture Centre (DCC) is recruiting two Mail Operations Supervisors to support and coordinate mail delivery and paper form handling for the 2026 Census of Population and Housing. The role is offered on a temporary basis from 13 July to 20 November 2026 and presents an opportunity to contribute to one of Australia’s largest data collection efforts.

About the role

The Mail Operations Supervisors will play a key role in supporting the Mail Operations Manager to oversee day-to-day warehouse logistics. Working under limited direction, the successful applicants will:

  • supervise daily mail and warehouse operations to ensure timely and efficient service delivery
  • in collaboration with the other Mail Operations Supervisor, oversee core activities such as barcode registration, envelope opening, form preparation for scanning, and secure storage
  • monitor the flow of materials through the mail operations process including the movement and handling of materials from logistics partners including Australia Post
  • as a part of Mail Operations leadership, monitor performance against targets and allocate tasks and staff based on operational priorities and skillsets
  • provide training, coaching and support to team members as required
  • actively promote a safe work environment, including compliance with traffic management plans, monitoring PPE use, correct use of machinery, coaching and training staff as required to perform their roles safely
  • foster collaboration across work units and maintain effective communication with internal stakeholders
  • maintain accurate records, document operational risks, and support the effective management of compliance and assurance requirements.

About you – what we are looking for

To be suitable for this role, you should demonstrate most or all of the following skills, qualities, and experience:

  • ability to supervise or coordinate staff and contribute to team outcomes
  • strong planning and coordination skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities in high-throughput settings
  • capacity to guide, support and develop staff across diverse teams
  • sound judgement and decision-making skills in fast-paced environments
  • strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with stakeholders
  • understanding of work health and safety requirements and ability to apply them in daily operations
  • initiative, adaptability and resilience in a dynamic operational setting
  • commitment to fostering an inclusive, safe and positive workplace culture
  • current forklift licence is an advantage but not essential.

Note: prior experience in warehousing, logistics or mail-handling environments is not required. These skills can be developed in the role, with training and support provided.

  • experience managing the flow of materials and working with logistics partners such as Australia Post
  • exposure to performance monitoring, workflow allocation and daily operational coordination
  • the chance to build capability in coaching, supporting and developing staff in a fast paced operational setting
  • practical experience applying WHS requirements in a warehouse environment, including safe equipment use, traffic management and PPE compliance
  • experience maintaining accurate records, managing operational risks and supporting compliance and assurance activities
  • the opportunity to strengthen communication and stakeholder engagement skills across multiple work units.

About the Census

The Census of Population and Housing (Census) is run every five years and is one of the largest and important collections to count the number of people and houses in Australia. The Census collects information about where we live, age, our culture, religion, income, education, living and housing arrangements. The information is used to make important decisions, such as government funding, input into policy-making and electoral boundaries. The next Census will be held in August 2026.
