We are looking for an Automation Engineer to join our on-site team at a customer location in Sweden. You will play a key role in managing and delivering high-quality Laboratory Instrument Support, ensuring critical automated systems run reliably and efficiently to maximise scientific productivity.
Your Role
As an Automation Engineer, you will be a technical specialist and a trusted partner to both scientists and vendors. You’ll take ownership of day-to-day support activities for a wide range of complex laboratory automation platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as first responder for critical equipment breakdowns, minimising impact on laboratory operations
- Provide high-quality, customer-focused engineering support in compliance with regulatory, safety, and engineering standards
- Diagnose and resolve faults on complex automated and robotic systems, working with internal teams and external vendors
- Plan and perform maintenance, commissioning, and system integration activities safely and cost-effectively
- Integrate laboratory equipment with multi-axis robots (e.g. Staubli, Denso, KUKA) for automated labware transfer
- Apply strong electro-mechanical and automation expertise, including motion control, communications, and system handshaking
- Support and maintain central automation control systems and interfaces to integrated devices
- Create, review, and maintain technical documentation such as SOPs, service reports, maintenance schedules, and safety documentation
- Support laboratory users with SOP development, change control, and operational design
- Manage spare parts availability and supplier relationships in a cost-effective manner
- Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors, service providers, and scientific teams
- Monitor system performance using KPIs and drive continuous improvement
- Support contract set-up, renewals, and budgeting
- Act as an ambassador for PerkinElmer, delivering a first-class service at all times
Your Background
You are structured, analytical, and comfortable working in fast-paced, operational laboratory environments.
Required Qualifications & Experience
- Post-secondary technical education such as:
- Yrkeshögskoleexamen in automation, mechatronics, electronics, or engineering
- University-level engineering studies (e.g. högskoleingenjör) in a relevant discipline
- OR equivalent technical education combined with relevant experience
- 5+ years’ experience in Laboratory Instrument Support and/or Laboratory Automation
- Hands-on experience with automated laboratory systems such as:
- Liquid handling platforms
- Cell analysis and flow cytometry systems
- Robotic and integrated platforms (e.g. Agilent/Velocity11, Thermo, Hamilton, Tecan, Beckman, Molecular Devices, Matrix)
- Strong analytical skills and a structured approach to complex problem-solving
- Experience working in high-uptime, regulated or operational environments
- Confident PC user (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to work independently while contributing strongly to a team
- High customer focus and a results-driven mindset
Desirable Experience
- Experience working in pharmaceutical, biotech, or other regulated environments
- Degree in Electrical, Electronic, Automation, Engineering, or Science
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (e.g. Ethernet, RS232)
- Experience with CMMS / maintenance management systems
- Background in inspection, testing, or system validation
