Responsibilities
Location Hampshire, Southampton GB Job ID REQ-056715PerkinElmer is seeking a motivated and technically competent Scientist – Flow Cytometry & Cell Culture to support laboratory operations at a customer research site. The successful candidate will be embedded within the Customer’s research environment and provide hands-on operational and experimental support for flow cytometry and cell culture workflows, in full compliance with Customer-defined SOPs, biosafety standards, and regulatory requirements.
The role sits within the PerkinElmer OneSource Technical Laboratory Services (TLS) organization and reports to a PerkinElmer Team Leader while working closely with Customer scientific staff. The position supports biologics and life sciences research activities and contributes to the generation of high-quality, reproducible data in support of research and development objectives.
This is a fixed term contract of 12 months with the possibility of extension or conversion to a permanent contract.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide operational and experimental support for flow cytometry and cell culture laboratories in accordance with Customer-defined SOPs, biosafety standards, and compliance requirements.
- Assist with the design, setup, and execution of flow cytometry experiments, including panel design, fluorophore selection, controls, sample acquisition, and gating strategies based on Customer objectives.
- Perform routine cell culture techniques such as passaging, seeding, harvesting, recovery, freezing, and maintenance of aseptic conditions.
- Prepare samples, reagents, and culture media, including FBS preparation, supplementation, aliquoting, labeling, and storage following approved protocols.
- Operate laboratory instrumentation independently following documented training, approval, and competency validation, with minimal supervision.
- Perform basic maintenance, calibration, and performance checks on flow cytometers, incubators, biosafety cabinets, and related laboratory equipment per manufacturer and Customer guidelines.
- Execute routine cell-based assays and experimental workflows as defined by the Customer and contribute to generation of accurate, reproducible data.
- Monitor cell health, assay performance, instrument status, and contamination risks, promptly escalating deviations, abnormalities, or nonconformances.
- Maintain accurate, contemporaneous documentation of all laboratory activities, ensuring data integrity, traceability, and compliance with Customer documentation standards.
- Prepare reports, summaries, and instrument logs; manage secure data archiving; support audits, inspections, and quality assurance activities as requested by the Customer.

Critical Skills
- Comprehensive understanding of how flow cytometers work.
- Attention to detail and understanding of the basic laboratory environment.
- Excellent organizational skills: ability to troubleshoot and solve problems independently, including identifying a problem and taking appropriate actions and knowing when to seek guidance.
- Great teamwork and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Demonstrates appropriate use of relevant equipment after training.
- Ability to work independently and lead a team.
- Strong multi-tasking, time management and organizational skills.
- Able to work a flexible schedule to meet our scientists’ needs.
Basic Qualifications
- BA/BSc degree in physical or biological science or a related science and 1 or more years of recent, directly related work experience in flow cytometry and cell culture laboratories
- OR foundation degree in life science or other relevant discipline and 3 years' flow cytometry experience in a laboratory environment
- OR relevant vocational qualifications with 5 years' flow cytometry experience in a laboratory environment.
- Basic experience with MS Office: Teams, Excel, Word, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications
- Working experience with flow cytometry, cellular imaging, ELISA and qPCR would be advantageous.
- Computational skills preferred for enabling automated data acquisition and analysis, and familiarity with related data analysis applications.
