This is an opportunity to lead a systems engineering team primarily supporting the Land IDT in the delivery of Land Platform, Integrated Digital Systems. The Principal Systems Engineer will functionally manage and lead the team's capability growth in line with the IDT and broader business needs.

You will operate as a Principal Systems Engineer specialising in Land Digital Systems development, working closely with internal and external stakeholders. You will primarily work into the Land IDT programme portfolio, whilst collaborating across domains and disciplines (e.g. Training & Simulation, Maritime, Mission Systems…), to ensure our technical capability is aligned and expertise / resourcing is shared appropriately.

The role:

Through your team lead role, you will assimilate a broad view of programmes and skills across the IDT. You will be incorporated into IDT leadership activity where appropriate. You will advise on your team’s deployments, development plans and career directions, working with chief engineers and IDT programme leaders, whilst ensuring knowledge sharing, skills growth and adoption of best practice.

You are likely to have a deep interest in the systems and technology that underpin military integrated digital systems, a desire to develop and support others, and an interest in our business operational system.

The Team Lead element is typically a day a week.

Day-to-day, you will be:

  • Ensuring the wellbeing and safety of your team in conjunction with work activities.
  • Engaging with your team, communicating policy and required actions, eliciting feedback, identifying issues for passing to senior management, and actioning as appropriate.
  • Advising on suitable deployments for your team, working with Chief Engineers, Programme leaders, Resource Managers and related stakeholders as necessary.
  • Supporting proactively, the recruitment, onboarding, integration and engagement of your team.
  • Developing individuals in their personal and professional skills and knowledge, ensuring that development plans are aligned to business capability needs.

Essential experience of the Systems Engineer:

  • You must have an Appreciation of systems engineering.
  • The Systems Engineer should have an appreciation of Open Systems Architecture principles, for example:
  1. Data communications and network technology (e.g. LAN technologies, transport protocols, application layer protocols, etc.)
  2. Distributed, real time systems
  3. Embedded systems principles
  4. Software architecture principles
  • Proven listening/mentoring/coaching and respected communication skills

Qualifications for the Systems Engineer:
