QinetiQ are now accepting applications for this key technical role within our Engineering and Innovation Business Unit (BU). The BU delivers mostly low TRL (i.e. prototype, research and development) engineering design and manufacturing projects and tasks across Australia with a geographic focus in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. Although ideally, this role will be based in Victoria other locations such as Canberra and Adelaide will be considered.
Reporting to the BU Chief Engineer, the purpose of the Deputy Chief Engineer (DCENGR) is to develop and sustain a world class and innovative engineering capability that is trusted by the customer, consistently delivers high quality, safe and valued products and solutions which meet customer needs and that attracts customer business.
As Deputy Chief Engineer you will be accountable for:
- Providing technical leadership and assurance within your technical discipline and to your primary program.
- Setting the engineering and technical standards and practice in their program area and authorising personnel to conduct engineering and technical work
- Working with the CENGR and Quality Manager to ensure technical management processes (as defined in the Quality Management System) enable achievement of business unit requirements in a safe, compliant, effective and efficient manner
- Working with the program teams, as appropriate to tailor the technical management processes to suit the scale and complexity of a program and improve overall project/program efficiency
- Providing high level of support and advice to Program Directors, Project Leads, Account Managers and senior engineering/technical staff
- Leading and upholding the highest standards of product engineering and technical practice
- Leading a culture of strong technical assurance and safety
- Developing close relationships with customers, stakeholders and relevant regulators to support resolution of technical matters and promote understanding and acknowledgement of QinetiQ’s technical assurance and safety culture
- Identifying and supporting pursuit of sales opportunities based on strong customer relationships and a deep understanding of their needs
- Providing technical supervision and mentoring to staff at all levels of experience and expertise to deliver technically accurate and efficient designs
To be successful in the role of Deputy Chief Engineer you will need to bring with you:
- First degree in science or engineering with an additional proven record of significant experience and demonstrated competence in an engineering leadership role
- Qualifications and experience to achieve Chartered Practicing Engineer with Engineers Australia or equivalent
- Proven and demonstrable track record of technical credibility in the Electrical Engineering discipline, including performing assurance roles within a Technical/Engineering Management System
- Demonstrated understanding of and experience in application of Australian Defence Force (ADF) certification principles, processes and standards
- An understanding of and commitment to principles and elements of a quality and technical/engineering management system
- Demonstrated understanding of and experience in system safety management and the Defence safety regulatory system
- The ability to communicate with and lead both teams of Subject Matter Experts and teams of diverse experience and expertise levels
- Superior communication and diplomacy skills to guide, influence and convince others, in particular colleagues in other areas/departments and external customers/agencies
- Strong attention to detail in making evaluative judgements based on the analysis of information from a variety of data sources which may extend beyond internal resources
- Credibility, integrity and high personal ethical standards that align with QinetiQ values and behaviours
- A keen interest in contributing toward the engineering profession through a variety of activities such as writing papers and blogs, delivering professional development presentations, mentoring others and maintaining membership of a professional organisation
