The ETPS Lead Systems Instructor will be responsible for the oversight of current and future delivery of systems instruction on ETPS. This will span both short and long courses and they will be required to lead the development of systems test and evaluation training on the School. This will include working with industry partners to identify how new or novel technologies will best fit into ETPS curricula.
The Lead Systems Instructor would act as a focal point for co-ordinating and standardising systems instruction, assisting the Head of Training (HoT) and Chief Flying Instructors (CFI’) in both the initial module development and continuous improvement of systems teaching.
As a member of the instructional staff on ETPS, they will also deliver instruction in other areas, dependent on qualification and the requirements of the School, as directed by the Short Course CFI, in consultation with the HoT.
Key accountabilities and responsibilities:
- Lead Systems Instructor for all ETPS Approved Training Organisation (ATO) courses
- Accountable for the Continuous Improvement of the delivery of Crewed and un-crewed Aviation System Test and Evaluation Methodology and Training
- Assist the CFIs on the Continuous Improvement of their respective courses, acting on own experience, customer demand and Inval/ Exval information
- Manage/ Lead or assist in general courseware development
- Assist in the maintenance of standards of instruction and content relevance for all systems modules on ETPS courses, including the oversight of guest / industry partners delivering instruction on ETPS’ behalf
- Assist the Short Course CFI and the HoT in Stakeholder Management of key ETPS relationships with the UK and overseas militaries and other key industry partners
- Assist the HoT and the ETPS Commanding Officer in the management of ETPS & QinetiQ’s relationship with Air and Space Warfare Centre (ASWC) (Key customer/ stakeholder
Key Capabilities/ Knowledge:
- Significant and demonstrable knowledge of Aviation Systems, including some knowledge of the Remote Piloted Air System (RPAS) sector
- Be able to conduct technical oversight of current training material
- Be able to manage the Continuous Improvement – for systems syllabus across short courses and/or EASA CAT I/II courses
- Be able to actively participate in training output of student Internal Validation (Inval) and customer External Validation (Exval) meetings and subsequent module improvement activities
- Instigating and supporting course development to improve learning objectives and safety
- Have a working knowledge of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and Military Aviation Authority (MAA) regulations and processes and the MOD Defence System Approach to Training (DSAT) process
- Be capable of acting as an ambassador for the QinetiQ ATO, QinetiQ Civil Flying Organisation (QCFO) and Flight Test Organisation, with the ability to operate in a stand-alone capacity, deployed to other locations to deliver training or for customer engagement
Essential Education, Qualifications and Experience/ Training:
Graduate Long Course (Cat 1/ Class A) Flight Test Professional (Test Pilot (TP) or Flight Test Engineer (FTE)) OR
Significant and demonstrable experience of conducting Test and Evaluation of advanced aviation systems
Essential Knowledge and Skills required:
- First rate, proven leadership, management and administrative skills
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in a flight test department / squadron / unit, engaged on a range of significant aviation systems projects
- Knowledge of flight test techniques and associated theory, as applicable to civilian and military current and future aviation requirements
- Knowledge of modern teaching methods as applicable to aviation training
- Business Development experience or demonstrable awareness of methodology

Desirable Criteria:
- Instructional qualifications from a recognised Aviation entity, such as Military QHI/ QFI/ EWI/ WI/ or similar or Civilian TRI TRE or similar or any Flight Test Instructor or Flight Test Engineer Instructor qualifications
- Extensive knowledge of, or experience within, the RPAS industry
- Medical category to support airborne instruction
- Previous experience of instruction in flight test. Experience of novel and/or developing technologies applicable to military or commercial aviation e.g. machine learning and artificial intelligence
- Experience of operating in a complex commercial environment
- Management or leadership experience within a matrix organisation
