Role Purpose:

The Environmental Lead role will provide competent and professional subject matter expertise and advice on all aspects of environmental management and assessment to all QinetiQ sites, businesses and functions within geographical region of responsibility.

The role must ensure that the sites within the geographical region of responsibility are compliant with environmental legislation and standards, assessing, analysing and collating environmental performance data and reporting information to internally, clients and regulatory bodies.

Key Accountabilities:

  1. To lead by example, champion best practice and encourage others to demonstrate appropriate leadership behaviours to promote a positive culture in line with our business standards and expectations for safety and environment.
  2. Lead on the ISO 14001 Standard and Audits across applicable sites, ensuring Heads of Sites are aware and prepared for external surveillance audits and assist them in identifying, prioritising and tracking environmental improvements and actions.
  3. Take the lead and drive specific environmental improvement programmes and collaboratively support programmes led by others.
  4. Work in partnership with site leadership teams to ensure robust, good quality environmental assessments are in place, and are reviewed/updated at appropriate intervals.
  5. Maintain knowledge and understanding of current environmental legislation and good practice, and its implementation for QinetiQ. Track proposed changes, ensuring businesses and leadership teams are aware of any relevant impacts to enable them to maintain legal compliance.
  6. Lead on effective engagement with internal and external environmental contacts/stakeholders around the organisation through site visits, remote collaboration, and participation at relevant site environmental meetings.
  7. Lead on planning ISO 14001 audits for sites within the geographical region, compliance evaluations and workplace inspections and consequent follow-ups, as required.
  8. Review and close out environmental incident reporting, working with business / functional contacts to help them improve data quality, and support the investigation/management of environmental incidents, commensurate with their significance/impact.
  9. Promote and champion a positive environmental management culture, actively seek continuous improvement, and ensure any significant lessons learned (e.g. from audits, incidents or best practices) are shared widely around the organisation.

  • A good working knowledge of the application of relevant legislation.
  • A good understanding of Environmental policies, processes and procedures.
  • A strong ‘people person’, with the ability to work with and influence many different people.
  • Ability to challenge and question people, process and systems in a direct but non-offensive and tactful manner
  • Ability to provide an effective, robust scrutiny of business activities.
  • Ability to evaluate situations and information quickly and reach workable solutions
  • Personal attributes must include confidentiality, independence, integrity drive, energy and enthusiasm.
  • Adopt a ‘hands-on’ approach where required.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • Degree / Level 6 Diploma in Environmental Management or equivalent
  • Experience, post qualification, as an environmental practitioner.
  • Chartered or working towards chartered status of a relevant professional body
  • Ability to demonstrate Continued Professional Development
  • Knowledge and experience in working with UK Regulatory authorities.
  • Working knowledge and experience of ISO 14001 management system.
  • Experience in leading management systems audits.
  • Experience in planning and leading investigations.
  • Experience of working in partnership with H&S professionals, conducting joint assessment and assurance activities
  • Ability to travel to QinetiQ sites across the UK
