The Role
As a Laboratory Technician, you will join a specialist team supporting national security through the preparation of explosive detection training aids used by detection dogs across the military, police and wider security sector. Working within a laboratory environment, you will gain hands-on experience of explosives science, materials processing and testing whilst contributing to projects that have a genuine real-world impact.
Day-to-day, you'll work as part of our Weapons Science Capability team, supporting laboratory-based technical activities including the preparation of explosive detection training aids, explosives safety testing and material processing. You'll collaborate with scientists and engineers on a range of projects, ensuring work is completed safely, accurately and in line with customer requirements.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Preparing explosive detection training aids used to support the training of detection dogs
- Producing specialist samples and materials for military, police, prison service and commercial security customers
- Supporting the delivery of explosives safety testing activities
- Processing materials and maintaining accurate technical records and documentation
- Providing practical support to scientists, engineers and technical specialists
- Following strict health, safety and quality procedures when working with explosives and hazardous materials
Essential experience of the Laboratory Technician:
- Experience working within a laboratory, manufacturing, engineering or technical environment
- Ability to follow detailed work instructions and processes accurately
- Understanding of the importance of quality, compliance and traceable documentation
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft 365 applications
- Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively within a team
- Proactive approach with a willingness to learn new technical skills
Essential qualifications for the Laboratory Technician:
- Minimum of 2 A Levels, including a relevant Technology, Engineering or Science subject
- BTEC or NVQ Level 3 in a relevant discipline
OR
- A minimum of five years' experience within a laboratory, manufacturing or engineering environment

This role is 37 hours per week based at our Fort Halstead site.

Our facilities at Fort Halstead, located in Kent, focus on a wide range of defence-related research, particularly weapons systems and military technology. Modern laboratories enable engineers and scientists to conduct high-tech research in material science, systems engineering and advanced simulation techniques.
